The Waterways Alliance on behalf of Melbourne Water began construction of a wetland and retarding basin near Tanti Creek in Mornington in May 2009.

The wetland and retarding basin will be built on 5.5 hectares of land bounded by Brimbrim Crescent, Samantha Drive and the Mornington Tourist Railway track.

This project will increase flood protection and naturally treat and reduce pollutants, such as nitrogen, suspended solids and phosphorus in stormwater entering Tanti Creek and Port Phillip Bay.

The wetland and retarding basin will also feature a public path around its boundary linking Brimbrim Crescent to Samantha Drive and Narambi Reserve.

What’s happening?

1. Earthworks and civil construction – In total approximately 160,300 cubic metres of soil will be moved around the site to build the wetland. This includes approximately 60,000 cubic metres which needs to be taken offsite by truck. Civil works are required to stabilise the banks and create the in and out flow facilities.

2. Building an outflow pipe – A 490 meter outflow pipe will be built from the wetland site to Tanti Creek along the Mornington Tourist railway line.

3. Planting and landscaping – over 75,000 native plants will be planted to vegetate the wetland and retarding basin.

How will the project impact local residents?

We are committed to minimising the impacts of our works on the community; however machinery working at the site will create noise during work hours 7am to 5pm.

While water carts will be used on site, residents may also experience more dust than usual.
