Community Rain Readers
We have uploaded the rainfall information from over 100 of our volunteer Community Rain Readers across Melbourne. These people read their rain gauge which is usually located within their backyard every day and note it down in a spreadsheet or on a form. At the end of the year they make a copy of their rainfall records and send these into Melbourne Water, the rainfall data is then uploaded into a database and onto the website.
This information, in addition to our own automated rainfall data, helps Melbourne Water understand rainfall patterns and distributions around Melbourne, especially after heavy storms.
This data also assists Melbourne Water’s flood and drought response planning as well as maintaining environmental flows in rivers and creeks for the health of the inhabitants such as platypus and fish.
We have Community Rain Readers that have been recording the rainfall at their home for over 50 years, as well as people that have started in the last couple of years. So some locations may have a lot of information and some may only have a little.
Since this data has not been through the rigorous checking and validation process for our official rainfall data, there may be missing, inaccurate or incomplete data in this section.
You can search by your suburb in the drop down list, type in your postcode, or simply click on a dot to view the rainfall information near you.
