Healthy Bay Initiative is a project to demonstrate best practice measures to improve the quality of stormwater discharging to Port Phillip Bay from a number of catchments in Melbourne's south eastern growth corridors. The bulk of the funding for this project is provided by the Natural Heritage Trust (NHT), and managed by Melbourne Water Corporation. It involves the construction of 10 wetlands to treat stormwater runoff in the Cities of Casey, Greater Dandenong and Kingston, and will serve as a demonstration of best practice environmental management of stormwater.

The total area of the wetlands will be approximately 150 hectares.

The Hampton Park Wetlands encompasses two of the 10 wetland project sites in the Healthy Bay Initiatives funded by the NHT. They are an example of best practice environmental management of stormwater in a rapidly developing urbanizing catchment.

Aim

State of the art principles in wetland design for an online type system have been applied; whereby 90% of annual flow volumes are treated - higher flows by-pass the wetland. Primary treatment of sediment and litter is conducted at, or near, source through the catchment.

Melbourne Water has ownership of the wetlands, and both Melbourne Water and the City of Casey will be responsible for the maintenance. The site is spanned by a path and boardwalk system that will retain the existing pedestrian link. These access pathways are being constructed by council.

Technical Information

Wetland Type : Online wetlands and extended sedimentation.
Site Size : 26.2 ha
Stormwater Treatments : Primary sedimentation occurs in the first wetland cell prior to passing through the wetland. The wetland has a serpentine arrangement, such that waters will have a maximum residence time through the treatment areas.
Wetland Area Provided : 8.3 ha
Wetland Planting Arrangement : The wetlands will have up to 80 % of planted area, throughout ephemeral, shallow and deep marsh areas. The fringed pools will be planted with emergent macrophytes, as will the waterway. These pools, as well as being part of the treatment system, will provide an amenity to the area.
Cost: $1.19 million for Wetlands East of Hallam Road; $389 000 for Wetlands off Kilberry Blvd.
