Renewable Energy
Biogas fired power plant at Western Treatment Plant
It takes a lot of energy to deliver safe water, remove and treat sewage, and manage drainage and waterways across the Melbourne region. Melbourne Water is working hard to secure our water supplies, and treat sewage, in a sustainable way.
A key part of our commitment to sustainability is meeting all our energy needs from renewable sources by 2018.
We now meet more than 50% of our energy needs using renewable resources. Most of the energy we generate ourselves comes from renewable sources including:
- Harnessing the power of water in our water supply system to generate electricity;
- Biogas collected from our sewage treatment process and combusted to generate electricity at sewage treatment plants; and
- Waste heat collected from our biogas electricity generation plant.
